What Really Matters

In the retail business you learn about human nature, the intimate parts of people's lives - their tastes and conflicts, their finances, their dreams and aspirations.

I love what I'm doing and never really questioned it . . . until an offer came my way to be part of a team that was building new business of marketing in institutions of higher education. My cousin wanted me to join her in the new venture they were running. Frank speak, the company's mission really captured my imagination. The position would mean more money, more responsibility, and a new challenge, but I wondered if it was right for me.

And when I thought more about it, I realized the emotions and passion I felt about the fashion retail that I'm working on. It was my music - the interaction among people, serving other people, learning from other people.

I didn't take the opportunity. My one hat was the same, but now it had a name - serving people - and it gave me a new view of where I was headed and what I might achieve.
